Program Overview
College of The Albemarle’s (COA) Medical Office Administration program will teach you the administrative and support skills needed for employment in the medical industry.
Course work includes:
- Medical terminology
- Information systems
- Office management
- Medical coding
- Billing and insurance
- Legal and ethical issues
Work-Based Learning (WBL)
WBL offers the opportunity to work for an employer in a position directly related to your program of study, earning you real-world experience by applying course instruction in an actual workplace setting.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, students will:
- Perform administrative duties to include: answer telephone, greet patients, update and file patient medical records, handle correspondence, schedule appointments, arrange for hospital admissions, and laboratory services admissions.
- Perform advanced administrative duties to include medical coding, completing insurance claim forms, basic bookkeeping functions, applying medical necessity guidelines, insurance eligibility, and EOB explanation.
- Apply basic knowledge of effective communication skills in the healthcare environment utilizing written and verbal skills.
- Demonstrate knowledge of code of ethics and basic skills in applying ethical/legal principles in the delivery of care.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the various specialties and allied health professions in healthcare.
