Elizabeth City, NC – As part of the Official Coast Guard Marathon Weekend Event, Visit Elizabeth City, USCG Base Elizabeth City MWR and College of The Albemarle (COA) are pleased to announce The United States Coast Guard Guardians Big Band will provide a free concert at COA – Elizabeth City. The concert will take place on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center, 1208 N. Road Street. The concert is free and open to the public; however, tickets are required

The United States Coast Guard Band is proud to present this free concert by the Guardians Big Band, a 16-piece jazz orchestra formed from members of the larger 55-piece U.S. Coast Guard Band, the official musical representative of the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security.
Under the direction of Coast Guard Band Trombonist Chief Musician Sean Nelson, the Guardians Big Band brings the infectious joy and spirit of America’s original art form through the sounds of swing, jazz, improvised solos, and classics from the Great American Songbook. This concert will feature music made famous by the likes of Harry James, Maynard Ferguson, and others including Mary Lou Williams whose legacy as a composer and arranger touched the careers of Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker. Selections include “Flying Home,” “Blues for Kapp,” “Come Fly With Me,” “Mambo Inn,” “Take the ‘A’ Train,” “The Peacocks,” and many more.
