Elizabeth City, North Carolina — As plans move forward for the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program at College of The Albemarle (COA), an annual scholarship has been created through the COA Foundation to assist a student enrolled in the course.

The scholarship, named the “George P. Armstrong Jr. Memorial Scholarship,” has been established by family members of Mr. Armstrong. The scholarship, with an annual gift of $1,000, will benefit a resident of COA’s seven-county service area enrolled full or part time in the college’s CDL program. The recipient chosen for the memorial scholarship must maintain a minimum 2.5 grade-point average and will be asked to compose a brief essay on his or her career goals as a CDL driver during the application process. This is the first scholarship established for students enrolled in the CDL program.

“We, the family of the late George P. Armstrong Jr., are elated to offer this scholarship that will carry on his legacy of trucking, education and family,” stated members of the family who gathered for the signing of the scholarship. “George P. Armstrong Jr. drove semi-trucks for over 40 years and was a proponent of education. He lived by these mantras: ‘You can’t make money sitting still’ and ‘It’s better to get somewhere late than to not get there at all’ (meaning drive safely).”
